puce[P]Review of Ubuntu Linux 7.10 Alpha, ATI's Latest Product (for Linux)

Preliminary Review: Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon Alpha 2

That's about all I have at this moment in time, to go into it in any further detail might be a bit pointless. Basically we're getting another Ubuntu release which will be good. Version 2.6.22 of the kernel, Gnome 2.20 and KDE 3.5.7 (with the ability to have a few packages from KDE4 RC2). It will be a belter but it goes without saying that Gutsy Gibbon will be a quality release.

AMD Radeon HD 2000 Series & Linux

With the open-source Avivo driver not yet having proper R600 support and the official fglrx driver only containing partial support without OpenGL acceleration, right now AMD R600 owners are bound to using the VESA driver. The AMD Radeon HD 2900XT was introduced on May 14 while the AMD Radeon HD 2400 and HD 2600 series were introduced only recently on June 28. Official support for the R600 series will likely not arrive in the fglrx driver for a few more months, which is very disheartening, and when the open-source Avivo driver will provide any R600 support is currently not known.

Still poor support from ATI, with many eyes on the open source project/s. Related: Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 with Compiz Fusion

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1

Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn has been out for less than two months but tomorrow we will see the first alpha (or in this case it's called a "Tribe") release of Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. We used the daily build of Ubuntu and Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon to do some exploring prior to the release of Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1 tomorrow morning.

Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 Tribe 1 - A Review?

I did not experience any ill-effects while using Gutsy, but I was only browsing the web using Firefox. One more note on Tribe 1, Pidgin has replaced GAIM as the instant messenger (as expected) and the OpenOffice Draw application was added. Well, there you have it, nothing exciting thus far, but really, do not expect much before the beta release in September.

[Ubuntu Linux Gutsy Gibbon] Tribe 2 released

Tribe 2 is the second in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Gutsy development cycle. The Tribe images are known to be reasonably free of show-stopper CD build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of Gutsy.
